A patient becomes eligible for hospice benefits when the patient’s physician and a hospice’s physician Medical Director certify that the patient’s life expectancy is approximately six months or less. A patient who chooses hospice rejects curative treatments, which are usually no longer effective or desirable, in favor of palliative treatments. Ideally, hospice should begin while there is still time for a patient to identify and pursue the goals which are most important to that patient.

Debbie Pierce, Administrative Assistant, has a fellow caregiver who will never forget one particular act of kindness: When her patient needed a vital medication no local pharmacy had, she could neither leave him alone to pick it up herself, or arrange to have it delivered. Debbie volunteered her time and gas money to bring the medicine to the patient herself—over 100 miles round trip. |
